Recently I’ve found myself listening quite a lot to the song ‘True’ by Marina and the Diamonds. I may have it on repeat a bit tooooo much … but I REALLY love the words. I adore the lyrics and love how we can apply the meaning behind the song to our daily lives. It’s just so relevant to each and every one of us.
Marina sings about people telling us what to do; thinking they know right or better than we know ourselves, when in actual fact they absolutely don’t.
I mean, life and dealing with people can be pretty hard sometimes. Everyone has an opinion on everything; and that includes an opinion on you and how you’re doing things. How you process people’s thoughts and the attitudes they display towards you can have a significant impact on your mental health. However it’s down to you to make that impact a positive, not negative, one.
Time for a quote … I really think that this one hits the nail on the head.
“You may not be able to control every situation and its outcome, but you can control your attitude and how you deal with it”.
It’s true. You cannot stop people giving an opinion. You cannot control what people think of you. But you can control how you personally deal with these situations. If someone makes a cutting remark for example, you have two choices. One is to get really upset about it, dwell on the comment and let it affect you emotionally. The second option is to listen, accept that that person is entitled to their opinion and then move on. The chances are that if the person in question is not being overly nice, then you won’t be choosing to spend much time in their company anyway. So … who cares? Instead, you will most likely choose to spend time with those similarly minded to yourself, those whose company you enjoy and those who make constructive comments and give compliments. Although it’s sometimes hard to make the right choice at the time, we all know that the second option is the better route to follow.
You need to trust your own instincts in situations relating to you. Don’t let others sway you. No-one knows you better than … you!
Marina also sings about body image; another subject close to my heart. We all have things we like and dislike about our bodies. But, whether we like it or not, we were born into our bodies and we have no option but to make the best of that gift bestowed upon us. As long as we don’t over-indulge and as long as we make every effort to take care of what we eat and try to exercise regularly, then we need to accept what we’ve been given. We need to love our bodies and be happy in the skin that we are in. Once you can learn to be happy with yourself, then that inner radiance shines through and becomes apparent to others. Appearances can be deceiving anyway and I’m happy with the old cliché about what’s on the inside being important!
All you can strive to be is the best version of you. And if you can achieve being the best that you can be, then you’ve totally got this! I mean, being yourself, is one of the easiest things you could possibly do, right?!
“Let it go and listen to your instincts”
